Drawing people into his infectious style of singing, Sam Asher has engaged audiences for more than 20 years. As cantor at Temple Beth David in Rochester New York, Sam drew on his middle-eastern roots and his passion for gospel music. He has written and performed original liturgical music that has been adopted by congregations around the country. His reggae inspired “Hodu” came full circle when an out of town colleague offered to share with Sam a “great new tune” he heard for the prayer- it was that Hodu! Realizing that it was his own tune prompted one of Sam’s famous ear splitting laughs. Sam’s love of folk music dates back to his days of being “Sam the guitar man”. Sam is a longstanding member of Golden Link Folksong Society in his hometown of Rochester, New York. He has performed with his guitar and violin at local venues, weddings, parties, and with his bands Farah! and Ben’s Basement. Farah! was proud to headline the Syracuse Jewish Music Festival in September 2013. Sam was honored to be chosen in 2008 as Artist in Residence for the Rochester-Modiin partnership with Israel. He was named Artist in Residence for 2010 National Havurah Committee Annual Retreat. |
Music educationSam attended Eastman School of Music where he received his bachelor's degree in 1979. He started his music career as a young boy singing with his father in synagogue. Sam's distinctive voice and unrestrained laughter can always be recognized in a crowd.
